Scientists Turn Nuclear Waste into Diamond Batteries That’ll Last for Thousands of Years

Nuclear energy is carbon free, which makes it an attractive and practical alternative to fossil fuels, as it doesn’t contribute to global warming. We also have the infrastructure for it already in place. It’s nuclear waste that makes fission bad for the environment. And it lasts for so long, some isotopes for thousands of years. Nuclear fuel is comprised of ceramic pellets of uranium-235 placed within metal rods. After fission takes place, two radioactive isotopes are left over: cesium-137 and strontium-90. These each have half-lives of 30 years, meaning the radiation will be half gone by that time. Transuranic wastes, such as Plutonium-239, are also created in the process. This has a half-life of 24,000 years. These materials are highly radioactive, making them extremely dangerous to handle, even with short-term exposure. The typical nuclear power plant creates about 2,300 tons of waste annually. 99 reactors are currently employed in the United States. That’s a lot of was

Molten iron river discovered speeding beneath Russia and Canada

A river of magma flows beneath Earth’s mantle Mick Roessler/Getty By  Andy Coghlan Deep below our planet’s surface a molten jet of iron nearly as hot as the surface of the sun is picking up speed. This stream of liquid has been discovered for the first time by telltale magnetic field readings 3000 kilometres below North America and Russia taken from space. The vast jet stream some 420 kilometres wide has trebled in speed since 2000, and is now circulating westwards at between 40 and 45 kilometres per year deep under Siberia and heading towards beneath Europe (see diagram, below). That is three times faster than typical speeds of liquid in the outer core. No one knows yet why the jet has got faster, but the team that discovered the accelerating jet thinks it is a natural phenomenon that dates back as much as a billion years, and can help us understand the formation of Earth’s magnetic fields that keeps us safe from solar winds. Straight to the core “It’s a remarkable

For the first time in nearly 150 years, India's economy surpasses that of United Kingdom

HIGHLIGHTS India has managed to overtake UK's GDP first time in nearly 150 years. The shift has been driven by India's rapid economic growth over the past 25 years, the report said. The report also gave credit to fall in the value of the pound for India's significant rise in GDP. NEW DELHI: Owing to Britain's recent Brexit-related problems and thanks to India's rapid economic growth, India has managed to overtake its erstwhile colonial master United Kingdom in terms of the size of the economy - the first time after nearly 150 years. This dramatic shift has been driven by India's rapid economic growth over the past 25 years as well downslide in the value of the pound over the last 12 months, a report published in Forbes magazine said. "Once expected to overtake the UK GDP in 2020, the surpasso has been accelerated by the nearly 20 per cent decline in the value of the pound over the last 12 months, consequently UK's 2016 GDP of GBP 1.

The new BMW is 100 horsepower short of an M5

BMW has announced an M Performance 5-series, coming to our shores as a 2018 model. The M550i xDrive should satisfy those customers who fancy themselves a sports car enthusiast, but don't want all that pesky sports car power. The M Performance cars are a bit more tossable than their standard offerings, but keep the power a bit lower so you can keep speeding tickets at bay. While the M5 sedan has 560 horses under the hood, the M550i will get a slightly more practical 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. So new it has a European license plate. BMW All that slightly more sane fun emanates out of a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. BMW says peak torque comes on at a low 1,800 rpm and that the sedan can scoot from a standstill to 60 mph in four seconds flat. Power gets from that V8 to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The all-wheel drive system is rear biased, but the computer should split that torque as it sees fit, so feel free to dive

How to change your life for the better in just one month

Blogger Svetlana Pokrevskaya makes a bold promise to all those who carry out her plan:  in just one month's time, you won't recognise yourself. As she explains, "Recently I received a letter from one of my readers. 'Hi, Svetlana! I want to change my life based on your lifestyle!' Wow. I began to wonder — do I actually have a specific "lifestyle"? Well, it seems I have! And straight away I wanted to put it into words, setting it out logically point by point. And it actually turns out to be ridiculously simple. I ended up putting it into four sections — one a week. That's just one month of independent work in order to change your life for the better! So, for every week there's a plan made up of three tasks, which you need to incorporate into your life and keep doing for the rest of the month. Ideally, you should continue doing them even after this, but that's for you to decide. Week 1:  Purifying your mind and body An early start
