The boom in the
gas and oil business, sectors globally, has refocused attention on efforts to
reduce corrosion on the surfaces of pipes and equipment used in the industrya new coating patterns based on nanotechnology
that can be applied on the oil pipelines to combat corrosion. "The
researchers are developingan electrolytes Nickel-Phosphorous coating with nano additives. The new coating will make an amorphous layer and it can prevent

Corrosion
of pipelines is one of the major problems faced by engineers and technicians in
the oil field. The annual cost of corrosion worldwide is over three per cent of
the world's GDPand is around $2.2 trillion as per the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.

unprotectead pipelines wetherburied in theground, exposed to atmosphere or submerged in water are susceptible to corrosion, without proper maintenance"The research outcome will be included into
the CCE curriculum and it will also help in developing technical expertise in
combating corrosion of pipelines
Florida-based Industrial
Nano tech, which develops applications for sustainablenanotechnology coatings
sold worldwide, says many manufacturers have had to concede energy loss in
certain process-related equipment due to the inability to insulate with
traditional coatings. Her company offers nano coatings as a way to insulate,
and prevent corrosion and CUI, and do so with short-term payback and long-term
performance.
“Many times, equipment is left un insulated due to the limitations of the past,”“With
new nanotechnology-based innovations, this is no longer the case. More of this
wasted energy loss can be recaptured, and insulation now has the ability to
prevent corrosion and CUI rather than causing it.”
Nansulate is a patented nanotechnology-based coating line from
Industrial Nano tech that the company says has been providing significant energy
savings and protecting equipment from corrosion for manufacturers for several
years.The
purpose of the application was to reduce heat energy loss of the petroleum
along the pipeline. The Nansulate coating was applied to the exterior of the
pipelines at an average of 350 microns dry film thickness. The pipelines’
surface temperature was measured to indicate reduction of heat loss. Prior to
being coated, the average temperature of the pipeline exterior was 140°F; after
coating, the average pipeline exterior temperature was 107.6°F. The coating
also provided corrosion protection in the severe marine environment.
International conference held at Mumbai on September 2007 by NACE (National
Association of Corrosion Engineers), focused on “Cost of Corrosion to the Nation”.
Scientists from the U.S.A, Europe and India dealt on the subject at great
length. Even a figure was arrived for India - world wide, U.S.A. A staggering
numerical of Rs. 1,25,000 Crores was justified.
GDP % G.D.P Losses due to Corrosion
- World Wide $ 30 Trillion Greater than 3% $ 930 bn
- U.S.A $ 9 Trillion Greater than 3.3 $ 300 bn
- INDIA $ 1 Trillion 3 - 4 % $ 40 bn
- Rs 1,25,000 Crores
Even this figure is considered to be a modest
one. More than 3,000 kms of coastline, higher temperature, humid climate
justify for higher losses.30% of this loss could be saved if optimum corrosion
management practices are employed. 63,000 km rail lines in India, pose a bigger
problem for preventive maintenance. Majority of railway accidents are
attributed to the corrosion. The cost of replacement of corrosion rails is given
a modest figure of Rs. 440 Crores.using
nanotechnology to fight corrosion of oil pipelines, which may costs millions of
dollars to the large industry
