Como você já deve ter reparado, desde a primeira versão do sistema operacional, o Android é batizado com o nome de um doce e sempre dispostos em ordem alfabética, veja:

Angel Cake;
Battenberg;
Cupcake;
Donut;
Eclair;
Froyo;
Gingerbread;
Honeycomb;
Ice Cream Sandwich;
Jelly Bean;
KitKat;
Lollipop

O que diz o Google?

Randall Sarafa, é o porta-voz do Google, e ao ser perguntado por isto, respondeu que as nomenclaturas surgiram por acaso, é uma piada interna que acontece na empresa, e começou no Android 1.5 nomeado de Cupcake.

A explicação mais recente apareceu durante a apresentação do Android 4.4 KitKat, o Google explicou que a escolha por nomes de doces, vem do fato de que “os smartphones e tablets Android adoçam nossas vidas”.
Então é isto, o mistério não passa de uma brincadeira interna entre os desenvolvedores, que acabou virando marca legítima do OS, e a cada nova versão do Android, é criada uma estátua do Android fazendo referência ao doce, e estas são colocadas na sede do Google localizada em Mountain View na Califórnia.
A próxima versão do Android, ao que tudo indica terá a letra M no começo, isto segue a ordem alfabética, e usuários tentam “chutar” qual o nome do doce, decidindo entre Android Muffin, Android Marshmallow e Android Milkshake.
Fico imaginando o que vão usar quando chegarem na letra Z ou acabar o alfabeto.
