From Wednesday, you can type web addresses in the Devnagari script with .bharat instead of the current .in domain. And soon, one can get to type web addresses in local languages like Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu and Tamil thanks to the initiative undertaken by National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).
Domain names .Bharat in Devanagri script also covers Indian languages like Boro, Hindi, Dogri, Konkani, Maithalai, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi,”
Speaking at conference on “New Horizons in IDNs and Reference to New generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs)” jointly organised by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and Afilias, a registry of domain names, Mr. Ravi Shanker explained that domain names were available only to Latin characters and the new development would make them available in local languages.
ICANN had also opened up its policy to permit not only the country names and institutional names but also new gTLDs, which were limited to only 22 earlier like .com, .net, .org, .edu, .mil and others. It would allow one to apply for company and city names as generic domains. However, only the local administration would be allowed to apply for a city name, while the registered companies would be allowed to apply for their names.
