They say stranger things happen at sea, but it seems stranger things happen on beaches, too.Billions of mysterious small creatures have been washed up on beaches along the west coast of the U.S, from Southern California to British Columbia. The jellyfish-like creatures are known as 'by-the-wind sailors' or Velella velella and have stunned scientists as they are rarely seen.
David Bader, director of education at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, told New York Daily News that the organisms were brought to the West Coast by a shift in the currents and winds.By-the-wind sailors float on the sea's surface and have a fin that acts as a sail so they can be transported by the wind.

Bader added that the unique creatures are actually "colonial organisms". They are not one main animal, but a colony of small animals that live together.Velella velella do sting but are too weak to harm humans.!
